Harvest of Gold is the debut major label full-length from Gossling, the performance moniker of Aussie (sm)art/pop songwriter and helium-laced singer Helen Croome. After a trio of auspicious EP's including her DC faved Intentional Living of last year, Gossling's sleek, deliciously off-kilter songcraft and intelligent lyricism remains intact on the new album. But what's new is the more electronic, less organic production as piano, guitars and live drums take a backseat to a rich underbelly of synths and plugged in beats, a change of direction that, strangely enough, blends well with her quirky vocal style -- or what The Guardian's Paul Lester described as "equal parts squeak and sorrow." We'll admit we miss the sound of the more primitive, old school aural pleasures -- the sound of a reverberating piano chord remains something special -- but we'll go with the polyester suit if it fits this well.
